When we went to the Town Hall meeting for my husband’s current training, I didn’t learn anything too life changing about the training. But I did learn something very life changing about Child and Youth Services (CYS).
You need to register you kids with CYS…even if you don’t plan to use their programs!
In cases of emergency, CYS may be able to provide emergency child care.
This is something I never thought about. I worry about my child getting sick, but it never occurred to me to worry that I could end up hospitalized for one reason or another while my husband is deployed. And I don’t think they will let me bring my son to the hospital with me.
When the speaker mentioned this service you could have knocked me over with a feather. I have planned every aspect of our lives. But I never thought about what would happen to my son if I was suddenly unable to care for him while my husband was away. It is so scary to think about. However, it is definitely something to be aware of.
It was mentioned in our meeting that the alternative would be for Social Services to step in but that that is typically a much more complicated process to get your child back. Again. Terrifying to think about. Using the CYS program if there is an emergency does not come with those hoops to jump through when you are once again able to care for your child.
We were told that, at least for Fort Hood, CYS is only able to step in and provide this service if your child is registered with them. I did some digging online and that may not be the case at other bases. To be sure, I highly recommend checking with the CYS office at your base to confirm that they offer this service and to make sure you are able to use the program should the need arise.
Peace of Mind
As parents, we never want to think of being in a position where we are unable to care for our children. But emergencies aren’t planned. Registering your child with CYS is free and as painless as anything is when the military is involved. And at the end of the day it is more than worth the paperwork. Because let’s face it, we spend a lot more time parenting without our spouses around than the average person. We need to know that someone can step in if we are suddenly unable to care for our kids!
Again. I am not an expert on the CYS emergency care program. It took me a lot of digging to find even a few pieces of information. But I highly highly recommend looking into it. The CYS office at your base will have the information you need! And if you ask enough times they might even give you the information too 😉
If you have used the CYS emergency care program, please leave a comment or send me an email! I would love to hear from you about your experience!
